Porta Gemona

San Daniele del Friuli Udine (1579) In 1579 Andrea Palladio supplied the designs for a gate on the road leading to Gemona, in the city of San Daniele del Friuli. The architect was in fact imposed on the Community of San Daniele by Cardinale Giovanni Grimani, who exercised patriarchal jurisdiction over the city, and who had commissioned Palladio the façade of the church of San Francesco della Vigna in 1562. Palladio never visited the locality, although he requested careful surveys of the site where the gate was to be inserted, in essence readapting his project for the Arco Bollani at Udine of twenty years prior.
