The Restoration and Preservation of Historic Monuments Department is responsible for surveying, registering and restoring all monuments nationally. Its engineers visit monuments, evaluate their structure, make plans and undertake any necessary repairs. The Department incorporates five sub departments: Architecture; Engineering; Registration and Observation; Photography; and Administration and Management. At present the Department has limited capacity to carry out its duties owing to lack of adequate documentation, equipment, transport and professionally trained staff. The Department also has special responsibility for the following heritage sites which are located in the capital city of Kabul:
